Guess the billionaire from 26 years of their fortune.

Tech founders, old-money dynasties and fortunes that collapsed, together in one pool of 49. The scale is logarithmic, so a jump from one billion to ten looks the same as ten to a hundred.

A founder's strip turns green the year the company went public. A fallen fortune fades back to mint and stays there. A dynasty is green from the first band to the last.

What one band is. One band is one year of the Forbes billionaires list. Pale mint means they were not on the list that year, mid green is billions, and deep vault green is one of the richest people alive.

How to read it

Three things to look for.

You do not need to remember the data. You need to know what kind of shape the thing you are thinking of would make.

  • Find the first band. The year someone first made the list usually dates them to a company or an IPO.
  • Watch for the gap.A pale stretch after a dark-green run is a fortune that fell — and that is often the answer.
  • Short strips are falls.Very few green bands means a brief, dramatic stay on the list.

Fortunes is a $0.99 one-time unlock — or part of the $9.99 unlock that includes every category, now and later. It also turns up in the free daily puzzle.

Fortunes questions

Is Fortunes free?

Fortunes turns up in the free daily puzzle. To play all of it, unlock it once for $0.99, or unlock every category — including ones added later — for $9.99. Neither is a subscription.

Where does the data come from?

Forbes' annual billionaires list, 2001 to 2026.

Why logarithmic?

So a fortune growing from one billion to ten is as visible as one growing from 100 billion to 200.
